In Kurma avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself as a tortoise. It is an interesting story involving both the gods (Devtas) and asuras (demons). In the ongoing saga of battle between the gods and asuras, on one occasion the gods suddenly lost all their strength due to a curse by the short-tempered sage Durvasa. The sage had once presented a garland of flowers to Indra, king of gods, who carelessly gave it away to his elephant which trampled it.

The Devtas approached Vishnu for help. Vishnu then asked them to churn the ocean of milk after adding medicines into the ocean. Mt Mandara could be used a the churning stick he said. He requested them to ask them help of Asuras in lifting the mountain in exchange for offer of the share of nectar of immortality that would ensue from the churning. Both the devatas and the asuras churned the ocean using the serpent Vasuki as the rope. At the start, playing a trick, Indra, king of the gods asked the asuras for the head end of vasuki. But asuras suspecting foul play, took the head end, only to be deceived as the poison from Vasuki was slowly weakening them. But as churning was proceeding the mountain was sinking and then Lord Vishnu took the form of the tortoise KURMA and kept the mountain afloat. As soon as the bowl of amrita, the nectar of immortality was out, the asuras grabbed it. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of an apsara, a beautiful maiden, and seduced the asuras into letting her distribute the nectar and also to abide by her order of distribution. As soon as the devatas were served the maiden disappeared thus totally deceiving the asuras and making them totally weak.

Origin

Kurma Jayanti is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu and it is celebrated by Hindus all over the world. It falls on 3rd May this year, which is also the Hindu day of Vaisakh Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi. Devotees must observe a strict fast on this auspicious day while offering pooja to Lord Vishnu.

Significance of Kurma Jayanti

Kurma Avatar is the second incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is a tortoise form of Lord Vishnu; greatly revered by most Hindus. During the great celestial event of Samudra Manthan, Mount Mandara was used as the pivot for churning the oceans. But when it began to sink, Vishnu appeared as a giant tortoise that held the mountain up on his back.

Thus without the help of Kurma Vishnu, the milk-ocean or ‘kshirsagara’ would not have been churned; and the Gods wouldn’t have found the 14 sacred ratnas or divine gifts.

Hindus all over the world are familiar with the legends related to Kurma Avatar, and the greatness of Lord Vishnu. The day of Kurma Jayanti thus holds special religious significance. Devotees fast throughout the day and offer worship to Lord Vishnu to seek his blessings.

KURMA JAYANTI
Day of Vishnu’s Tortoise Incarnation (Kurma)
Day of Stability
KURMA Avatar is Lord Vishnu’s incarnation as tortoise. The following legend from the Puranas tells us its origin. In the saga of the ongoing battle between gods and asuras (demons), at one time the gods lost their strength. This was due to the curse of the sage, Durvasa, who had presented a garland of flowers to Indra, king of gods, who carelessly gave it away to his elephant Airavata who promptly trampled it. Due to this indiscretion, the sage cursed the gods upon which they lost all of their might. The Devtas approached Vishnu for help. He directed them to add medicines, then churn the milk ocean using Mt Mandara as the churning rod. He told them to ask the asuras to help them lift the mountain in exchange for a share of the nectar of immortality which would ensue from the churning. Both the devatas and the asuras churned the ocean using the serpent Vasuki as the rope. At the start, playing a Machiavellian trick, Indra, king of the gods asked the asuras for the head end of vasuki. But asuras suspecting foul play, took the head end, only to be deceived as the poison from Vasuki was slowly weakening them. But as churning was proceeding the mountain was sinking. It was then that Lord Vishnu took the form of the tortoise KURMA and kept the mountain afloat. As soon as the bowl of amrita, the nectar of immortality was out, the asuras grabbed it. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a beautiful maiden, and seduced the asuras into letting her distribute the nectar and also to abide by her order of distribution. As soon as the devatas were served the maiden disappeared thus deceiving the asuras and giving the devas the advantage.

“The green light was given to J’s new show(after yagya was performed) – discussions about giving it the go-ahead had earlier stalled with indications that it would not be commissioned. Production is now underway and all is going smoothly.” L Australia
Dear Ganesh, Wanted to let you know while you are still in India so that you can pass on my heartfelt thanks in person to the pundits who performed my daughter’s Venus Yagya…We’re just home from the screening of the Australian Student Short Film Awards at Federation Square…she and her friend won 1st prize for their section
[Years 7 to 10] and then proceeded to also win the Grand prize for the evening, beating the year 10, 11 and 12’s… It means so much to me on so many levels so thank you so much for all your support, help and organization of the Indian side of things. I feel such relief as much as anything. It’s all going to be OK. love and blessings, J Australia
During the eight days of yagya, I began to feel very peaceful and could see very clearly my direction and position in life. I do not ever remember feeling as positive and calm as I have since the Yagya has been completed. It is now almost 2 weeks, and I have had the usual low days, but have felt at peace with myself and the low times have paled in insignificance. Thank you Ganesh. B Australia
“The vedic realm delivered the protection – the arrows bounced off – for many hours the barrister asked long, tricky questions and I was able to answer all of them. So I now know what that term “arrows bouncing off” means. Thanks and please pass on my appreciation to the pundits.” B Australia
Dear Ganesh, I thought you might be interested in the visible manifestations of my saturn yagya. The most significant change was probably in my daughter rather than in me. At 10 she had become argumentative, confrontational and very needy. We had been working on this for some time. The week after the yagya she totally changed. Not her personality, but her attitude. She suddenly, overnight became helpful, discursive rather than argumentative, co-operational rather than confrontational and discussed what she needed to be happier. For her it was a great relief to be able to manage without becoming catty, angry or solitary. For me it was also a great relief and I could now relax and trust that she was OK; wonderful for both of us.” P. Aust
“We have been desperately trying to get assistance … for two years, but this is the first time that they have actually taken action… this is a turning point in his recovery, definitely the result of divine grace.” N Australia
“Hi Ganesh, Just wanted to let you know I’m feeling so much better after that wonderful yagya. There has been a total shift in the dynamics between my father and I which is very liberating. Thank you for all your assistance in this. Bye for now,” A. Australia
